Archive for the Anime & Games

Eorzea, here I am!

This week, something great arrived in my mail: Final Fantasy XIV. I had promised myself I wouldn’t touch the game until Square spends a month or two fixing bugs and I guess today proved that I am a very weak human hyur. So far so good, I spent a night creating my character, finishing my first quest and visiting half of my own town. This game is huge and up to now, the experience has been nothing but excellent. A shame I had to spend a lot of time tweaking my graphic card configuration though; it reminded me why I now prefer playing games on consoles so much.

My character is in Bodhum so if you find me, come and say hi! I’ll be cooking and picking up flowers in the forest for the next couple of days. Exciting stuff, I tell you…

The new Disney princess movie

princessfrog_450x300[1]I just went to see the new Disney movie: The Princess and the Frog. First, I have to say that being a huge fan of old 2D animated classics from the company, I had huge expectations for this one and I’ve been waiting for it for the past 2 years. And well, let me tell you: this movie is wonderful!

As I try not to read about movies before watching them (to avoid spoilers), I was not sure what to expect but I was certainly wondering if old ingredients like music would be part of the mix, especially after reading lots of idiotic comments in the past about that subject. Right from the start, music is there alright, with very jazzy, rhythmic songs from beginning to end. The story is sweet, the characters are great, humour is old fashioned, and everything is put together in a wonderful package. It may not be as funny as Aladdin or as epic as The Lion King but that’s also what makes this movie great: it’s new, it’s unique, and it has its own theme.

Congratulations to Disney for giving us this piece of work. Thanks to you, I felt I was 15 again :-) .

Final Fantasy XIII is coming

Final Fantasy XIII Release Date

FF-XIII finally has a release date in North America! March 9th 2010, a date to remember. I now know what I’ll be doing on that Tuesday and during the weeks after that :-) .

Evangelion: 1.01 coming to DVD

It’s about time, the first of the new Evangelion movies is coming to DVD in North America. Funimation even offers an 8 minutes preview of the beginning of the film. Their web sites mentions “1.01”, which means we probably won’t be enjoying the improved version labelled 1.11 in Japan. In any case, this is highly recommended to any anime fan, especially if you enjoyed the original series. Personally, I will wait for the 4 movies to be released in a boxset, probably in their latest released version, before buying any of those. Let’s hope Fantasia will be presenting 2.0 next summer. This kind of thing is really much more enjoyable on a big screen (and in its original Japanese version :-) ).

Evangelion 1.0 - You are (not) alone

Here’s an excerpt of what Hideaki Anno had to say about the new movies in 2007. The complete text is available on Funimation’s web site, although not properly credited:

The visual work called Evangelion is composed of a variety of desires.

The desire to put our own honest feelings on film.
The desire to convey to as many people as possible the fundamental
appeal of touching primitive emotions and how versatile the medium
of animation is in its expression and images that it is capable of realizing.
The desire to take the exhausted animation of Japan and carry it into the future.
The desire to shatter the spreading sense of helplessness.
The desire to carry on the strength of spirit that lives on in the real world.

The desire to realize these desires once again.
